EPFO Passbook Portal & Online UAN Activation: A major update brings relief to crores of Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) subscribers. After being down for nearly two weeks due to maintenance, the EPFO Passbook Portal has finally been relaunched. PF account holders can now easily log in and view their account statements.

The portal had been offline since the last week of June due to system upgrades and maintenance. However, alongside the portal's relaunch, the EPFO has introduced a significant change regarding UAN activation—something every salaried employee needs to know. Let’s break down the details in simple terms.

1. 8.25% interest payout is on the way; here’s how to check your balance

The passbook portal has become operational just as the EPFO prepares to start crediting annual interest at a rate of 8.25% for the 2025-26 financial year into subscribers' accounts, starting July 15. Crores of PF members needed to be able to check their passbooks on time to verify if the interest amount had been credited.

Data for select years visible: Upon logging into the portal, a notice now appears stating that transaction and balance details for recent financial years are immediately available. However, data from older years is currently being transferred within the system and will become visible over the next few days. Members do not need to take any action for this; it is an automated process.

2. Major setback: UAN activation facility via website discontinued

Following a complete system upgrade, the EPFO has implemented a major change. Previously, employees could activate their Universal Account Number (UAN) by visiting the EPFO’s 'Unified Member Portal,' but this web-based UAN activation facility has now been permanently discontinued. The new portal is now displaying a notice stating that UAN activation can no longer be performed via the website.

3. How will UAN activation be done now? Note the new method

To enhance security and reliability, the EPFO has made the entire UAN activation process fully digital and mobile-based:

Use the UMANG App: Employees must now download the government's UMANG app on their mobile phones to activate their UAN.

Face Authentication Technology (FAT): Aadhaar-based face authentication technology has been made mandatory for UAN activation via the UMANG app. This means your UAN will be activated only after your face is scanned.

4. This change is part of a technical upgrade

The EPFO began rolling out its new and upgraded 'Unified Member Portal' in a phased manner starting July 3. The department states that the objective of this major technology overhaul is to significantly strengthen the security of PF accounts, resolve system glitches, and provide users with a superior digital experience.

Although it may take a few days for transaction history from previous years to appear, the launch of the portal will now allow millions of subscribers to easily track their monthly contribution history and accrued interest.
