The women’s compound team comprising the trio of Indian archers Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Prithika Pradeep and Chikitha Taniparthy had to settle for silver in Stage 4 of the World Cup. On Saturday (July 11), the women’s compound team lost to Colombia 228–232 in the final, giving them silver. With this silver, India opened its account in the final tournament of the season. The Indian contingent hopes to increase its medal tally in the matches to be held later in the day.

The world number three Indian team in the women’s compound team ranking had won the gold medal in the first stage of the Archery World Cup held in Puebla, Mexico in April. However, this time it could not present any special challenge to the world number 14 Colombian team. The Colombian team made a spectacular comeback and won the title with complete dominance.

17 year old Prithika hit the target of 10 points six times. However, the team’s biggest disappointment came from the poor performance of veteran Jyothi Surekha Vennam, who scored 10 points only three times in her eight arrows, due to which India could not put up a good challenge in the match.

This archer did wonders for Colombia

For Colombia, Alejandra Usciano performed brilliantly and scored 10 points eight times in a row and this proved to be the biggest difference between the two teams. World number seven and former world champion Sara Lopez had a relatively up-and-down performance but thanks to Usciano’s superb archery, Colombia managed to maintain control throughout the match.

These Indian players are in the double medal race

Prithika has also made it to the semi-finals of the women’s compound individual event and now needs just one more win to clinch another medal. India is also in the race for two medals in the recurve category. Kirti Sharma is also in the race to win double medal. Kirti Sharma will compete with India’s number one archer Dheeraj Bommadevra in the recurve mixed team bronze medal match. Also, Kirti has reached the semi-finals of the women’s individual event, so another win will ensure her another medal.
