London. Indian cricket team (Test and ODI) captain Shubman Gill is away from the cricket field these days, enjoying the most prestigious tennis tournament ‘Wimbledon’ in London. Gill, who came to watch the men’s singles semi-final match on Friday, made a very interesting comparison between tennis and cricket. He said that he sees glimpses of his batting in the game of Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz.
Similarities between Alcaraz’s ‘drop shot’ and Gil’s ‘short-arm jab’
Carlos Alcaraz’s ‘drop shot’ (dropping the ball very close to the net) is considered one of the most lethal and strategic weapons in modern tennis. Shubman Gill compared it to his signature shot in cricket, the ‘short-arm jab’ (a shot played with the elbow slightly bent on short pitched balls).
Speaking to GeoStar, Gill said, “Carlos Alcaraz’s drop shot reminds me of the ‘short-arm jab’ of cricket. I also play this shot and it is my special shot. This shot deceives the opponent and is very effective.”
When Gill was asked that if he ever got a chance to play a doubles match in tennis, who would he choose as his partner? On this he immediately took the name of Alcaraz. He said that Alcaraz enjoys the game very much on the court, so pairing with him will be very fun and interesting.
Indian captain is a fan of Roger Federer
Shubman Gill named the greatest tennis player Roger Federer as his all-time favorite player. Gill said, “In childhood, people used to say about Federer that he does everything very effortlessly on the court. But when you play a professional sport yourself, then you understand how much hard work goes behind the scenes to make something look so effortless on the screen.”
Gill further added, “Even in cricket, people often say about me that I play very smoothly, but only I know the hard work behind it. I admire the beauty and dignity with which Federer played tennis.” Gill said that these four greats have completely dominated their game in their respective eras. Sitting with him and listening to him talk about his sporting journey would be like a dream come true.
Supported Yannick Sinner for Wimbledon title
While predicting the winner of the ongoing Wimbledon tournament, Shubman Gill supported Italy’s star player Yannick Sinner. He said that Sinner is a fantastic player and the dignity with which he conducts himself on and off the court is commendable.
