West Indies Head Coach Daren Sammy Confirms ODI Retirement of Their Star All-rounder

The West Indies head coach has delivered a shocking revelation, mentioning that the former WI skipper Jason Holder has retired from the One-Day Internationals (ODIs). He further confirmed that the all-rounder is interested in representing the country in the red-ball format. Daren Sammy made the comments during an appearance on the Wisden Cricket Podcast, where he discussed Holder's international future. 

 

It is worth mentioning that Jason Holder is yet to announce his ODI retirement publicly. Therefore, the remarks from Sammy have shocked cricket fans. Jason Holder is currently participating in the Major League Cricket (MLC) for Los Angeles Knight Riders (LDKR).

During a podcast with Wisden Cricket, Sammy was asked if Holder is still in their future plans across the formats. While discussing the prospects, the head coach made the shocking revelation. 

 

On the Wisden podcast, Sammy said: 

 

"Yes, Jason is still in the mix for Test. I know he's retired from ODI cricket. Test cricket for sure. He has spoken about his interest, but obviously, you know, he's a franchise player as well... it's us talking about availability, where he fits. But yeah, he's made clear that he's still interested in Test cricket. So once that fits with his schedule and obviously the plans that we have, I'm pretty sure that will happen.”

 

Jason Holder’s ODI retirement came as a surprise to all cricket fans. Players like to announce their retirement publicly either by a social media post, a press conference, or official board statements; Jason Holder has not publicly confirmed that he has retired from the 50-over format. 

 

Glimpse of Jason Holder’s ODI Career

 

Jason Holder debuted for the West Indies team in 2013. A year after his debut, he was appointed the ODI skipper of the national team. He featured in 138 ODIs between 2013 and 2023, scoring 2,237 runs at an average of 24.85, with a highest score of 99 not out.  

 

Holder was a cunning pace bowler with a height of 6'7". His unexpected short-pitched deliveries or nailing yorkers were key weapons. Holder claimed 159 wickets at an average of 36.96, including best figures of 5/27 and two five-wicket hauls, and also took 65 catches during his ODI career.
