Erik ten Hag has confirmed he will not be taking over as the next head coach of the Netherlands national football team following Ronald Koeman’s exit. The former Manchester United boss made it clear that he intends to continue in his role as technical director at FC Twente, leaving the Dutch Football Association (KNVB) to continue their search for a new manager.

Ten Hag turns down Oranje opportunity

The KNVB have now been informed that Ten Hag is not available for the national team position. The Dutch tactician, who previously managed United, reiterated that he has no plans to assume the coaching reins for the Oranje in the near future. His decision leaves the Netherlands urgently seeking a new coach after Koeman’s resignation, which followed the team’s disappointing round-of-32 elimination at the 2026 World Cup.

Focus remains on Twente project

Speaking from FC Twente’s training camp in Tegelen, Ten Hag quickly dispelled growing rumours linking him with the national team position. The experienced coach emphasised that his current role at the club is a long-term project he deliberately committed to and does not intend to abandon.

In a statement to AD, Ten Hag said: “I am not available. I deliberately chose to take this step. I will be fully focused on this for at least the next two years. I am enjoying my time here and want to help the club move forward.”

Koeman accepts blame for early World Cup exit

Koeman’s resignation came amid heavy criticism after he opted to shift from the Netherlands’ traditional 4-3-3 formation to a more defensive 5-2-3 setup against Morocco — a move that left midfielder Frenkie de Jong isolated and the team struggling for cohesion. The decision proved costly as the Oranje were knocked out on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time.

The 63-year-old coach later announced his departure with an emotional message to supporters, acknowledging full responsibility for the disappointing campaign. In his statement, Koeman said: “We all shared the dream of making history at this World Cup, but we fell short. No one is more disappointed by that than I am. As head coach, the responsibility ultimately rests with me.”

KNVB faces leadership challenge

Koeman’s departure and Ten Hag’s refusal to take the job have left the KNVB facing a significant leadership vacuum.
