Michael Edwards is set to leave Liverpool once again after stepping down from his position as Fenway Sports Group’s Chief Executive Officer of Football.
The renowned transfer strategist, who had informed the club’s ownership last autumn of his intention to depart, has now completed his notice period and will exit with a year still remaining on his contract.
Edwards, who previously served as Liverpool’s Director of Football, made his return to Anfield in 2024 in an expanded capacity following the exit of Jurgen Klopp. At that time, FSG were also exploring the possibility of acquiring another football club.
However, after examining potential deals involving around 25 clubs — including Malaga and Bordeaux — the ownership group opted not to pursue a multi-club structure.
Sources indicate that Edwards believed the role was not evolving as originally envisioned by either himself or FSG. Uninterested in reverting to a sporting director position, he decided it was best to move on from the organisation.
Although FSG had been keen to retain his services, his departure means that the group’s president, Mike Gordon, is now expected to assume a more substantial role in overseeing Liverpool’s operations.
Edwards’ exit coincides with speculation that Sporting Director Richard Hughes, whom he had appointed, is also preparing to leave Anfield to join Al-Hilal.
During the tenure of Edwards and Hughes, Liverpool appointed Arne Slot as manager and captured the Premier League title. However, following a disappointing 2025–26 campaign, Slot was dismissed and replaced by Andoni Iraola, who arrived from the Scottish manager’s former club, Bournemouth.
Under their leadership, Liverpool shattered the British transfer record with the £125 million acquisition of Alexander Isak. In total, the club’s transfer spending reached nearly £550 million, with notable signings such as Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Giovanni Leoni, and the most recent arrivals, Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Munoz.
