During England’s hard-fought victory over Mexico, a television graphic appeared to show that Harry Kane had been booked, causing confusion among fans and pundits alike.
The Three Lions came through their tense win at the Estadio Azteca with five players navigating potential disciplinary trouble. However, following Jordan Henderson’s tournament-ending injury, that number has now been reduced to four.
Importantly, Kane is not among the England players who need to tread carefully ahead of their quarter-final clash with Norway in Miami on Saturday night.
The misunderstanding arose when Kane, currently competing for the 2026 World Cup Golden Boot, conceded a penalty for a high challenge on Mexico midfielder Brian Gutierrez in the second half.
Referee Alireza Faghani pointed to the spot after consulting the VAR monitor. Surrounded by players from both teams, he then brandished a yellow card—seemingly towards Kane—and a broadcast graphic confirmed that assumption.
However, FIFA’s official match record clarifies that the yellow card shown in the 68th minute was actually issued to Marc Guehi, confirming that the on-screen graphic was incorrect.
As a result, any concerns about the England captain facing a one-match suspension going into the Norway encounter have been dispelled.
Declan Rice remains the only England player at risk of suspension, not Harry Kane.
Due to the expansion of the World Cup from 32 to 48 teams, FIFA has revised its yellow card policy to account for the additional round of fixtures.
Previously, players who accumulated two yellow cards before the semi-finals would automatically serve a one-match suspension. Under the updated FIFA regulations, yellow cards are now cleared twice during the tournament—first after the group stage and again following the quarter-finals.
Consequently, the England players currently on the disciplinary edge against Norway are Marc Guehi, Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, and Nico O’Reilly.
