‘Recency bias’ shapes Harry Kane and England’s GOAT debate as ex-Three Lions striker places record scorer among the greats rather than at the summit
Harry Kane continues to be a major part of discussions around the greatest footballers in England’s history, but former national team striker Stan Collymore has told GOAL that “recency bias” plays a big role in that conversation. He believes that instead of identifying a single greatest player, England should celebrate a “pool” of outstanding talents. Kane is currently experiencing the most prolific period of his career while chasing World Cup success in North America.
Kane vs Haaland: England ready to face Norway
After registering a career-best 61 goals for Bayern Munich last season, Kane has carried that same exceptional form into FIFA’s premier tournament. He has already scored six times in the competition so far.
England are now set for a quarter-final meeting with Norway, where Kane will come up against another elite striker, Manchester City’s No.9 Erling Haaland. Both forwards are competing for the Golden Boot award at this stage.
England’s greatest: Kane joins Moore and Beckham in that debate
Should Kane, as captain, lead England to their first major trophy since the legendary 1966 World Cup triumph, his claim to being the nation’s greatest player would gain even more weight. He already tops the country’s all-time goal chart with 85 strikes and is only six appearances short of equalling Peter Shilton’s record of 125 caps.
There is no debate that Kane ranks among the finest ever to wear the Three Lions jersey. The question that remains is whether he could surpass icons such as Bobby Moore, David Beckham, Bobby Charlton, and Wayne Rooney to take the top spot.
England encouraged to honour all legends instead of ranking them
Addressing the matter, former England forward Collymore, speaking on behalf of BetTOM, told GOAL: “Recency bias is real; we start to look at people and label them as the greatest ever and so on. Jimmy Greaves scored 44 goals in 57 appearances, which is remarkable, especially considering he played fewer games — no Nations League fixtures, fewer qualifiers, and fewer tournament matches.”
He added, “He would be part of a group of great strikers such as Gary Lineker, Nat Lofthouse, Jimmy Greaves, and Geoff Hurst. There’s no need to compare them; we can simply appreciate their brilliance. Harry Kane, without doubt, belongs in that group as a modern-day England great.”
Collymore continued, “Will Kane be remembered as England’s single greatest ever player? He’ll certainly be in that pool of legends. Unless you are someone like Lionel Messi, Diego Maradona, or Pele — players who are almost universally considered the greatest — it’s always going to be subjective.”
“But he definitely will be remembered as one of England’s finest players, one of their top goal scorers, and one of their great captains. As a captain, what remains for him is to lift a major trophy — something England has come close to achieving but hasn’t quite managed yet.”
World Cup and Ballon d’Or: Kane in pursuit of major honours
The stars appear to be aligning for England ahead of the 2026 World Cup, with Thomas Tuchel’s men already overcoming some difficult tests. Their resilience was evident when they battled past Mexico at the Azteca Stadium despite being reduced to ten men.
Jude Bellingham has been another standout performer at the peak of his abilities, providing crucial support to Kane. The spotlight will once again fall on the England captain when he faces Haaland and his Norwegian teammates in Miami. With his 33rd birthday approaching on July 28, Kane could yet crown his career with World Cup and Ballon d’Or success, showing no signs of slowing down.
