Rising tensions between Iran and the US, coupled with recent firing incidents in the Strait of Hormuz, have once again sparked concerns reaching Indian households. People are worried about potential LPG cylinder shortages or skyrocketing prices, similar to past instances.
In fact, approximately 60% of India's LPG supply passes through the historic and sensitive Strait of Hormuz. Any tension along this—the world's busiest oil route—raises fears of a direct impact on the global supply chain.
Will India face a gas shortage again?
The good news is that there is no need to panic at the moment. Experts state that there is no significant impact on India's crude oil imports so far.
Russia emerges as India's largest supplier
Russia currently accounts for the largest share of India's crude oil imports. In June, India's crude oil imports hit a record high of 4.93 million barrels per day. More than half of this volume (approximately 2.7 million barrels) came from Russia alone. This strategy has shielded India's supply from the effects of international crises.
Have cylinder prices increased? (Rates as of July 10)
Despite the tensions, there has been no change in LPG cylinder prices today. Current rates in major cities are as follows:
City Domestic Cylinder (14.2 kg) Commercial (19 kg)
Delhi ₹942 ₹2930
Kolkata ₹968 ₹3081.50
Jaipur ₹945 ₹2970.50
Chennai ₹957 ₹3106
Booking and supply guidelines
The government and oil marketing companies have clarified that there is no shortage of domestic LPG cylinders. Supplies remain normal; therefore, there is no need to book extra cylinders or hoard them out of fear. Booking procedures and rules remain unchanged.
