Insights gained from the development of the all-electric Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door are already influencing other models in the AMG range—especially at the smaller end. Mercedes-AMG has now unveiled a new variant of the CLA-Class subcompact EV, and its specifications are truly impressive.
Despite carrying the same Mercedes-AMG CLA45 4Matic+ name as the previous petrol-powered version, this is a completely new electric model. It features three axial flux motors, a setup first introduced in the GT EV, which together generate a remarkable peak output of 680 horsepower. That’s over 250 hp more than the previous turbocharged four-cylinder CLA45. Even with the added weight of a 94-kWh battery that pushes the curb weight past 5,000 pounds, this performance-focused CLA can still rocket from 0 to 62 mph in just 2.7 seconds.
The car comes equipped with adaptive dampers offering three selectable suspension settings linked to various driving modes. Among them is the unusually named “AMGFORCE S+” mode, which Mercedes-AMG claims delivers an “authentic, AMG-style combustion engine experience.” Similar to other recent high-performance EVs, this feature incorporates artificial engine sounds—replicating the previous CLA AMG’s four-cylinder tone—and simulated gear shifts to mimic the traditional driving sensation.
Since it remains part of the latest CLA electric lineup, the model continues to offer excellent range and rapid charging capabilities. Mercedes-AMG quotes a WLTP-rated range of 416 miles, though this figure would likely drop closer to 300 miles under the stricter EPA testing cycle. Using a 330-kW fast charger, the battery can recharge from 10 to 80 percent in just 22 minutes. The company also states that a 10-minute charge can deliver approximately 168 miles of driving range, though this figure is based on the WLTP cycle.
In Europe, the CLA45 will be available in both sedan and estate (referred to as the “shooting brake”) body styles. As for the U.S. market, Mercedes-Benz USA issued a statement saying, “Mercedes-Benz USA continually assesses its product portfolio to align with market demand and consumer preferences. We remain dedicated to delivering innovative and high-performance vehicles that resonate with our customers’ desires.” However, a company representative reportedly confirmed to Car and Driver that the CLA45 EV will not be offered in the U.S. in either body style. American enthusiasts, therefore, may have to admire this powerful electric AMG from afar.
