Shreyas Iyer was disappointed after India lost the fourth T20I by nine wickets against England as the host nation sealed the series 3-0, with one game left. He is still searching for his first win since replacing Suryakumar Yadav as India’s T20I captain in June.
He won another toss, but the Men in Blue once again failed to cross the finishing line. India managed to reach 158 for 7 in 20 overs, but the score was not enough as England reached 159 for 1 in 13.5 overs.
“It was a disappointing performance, and 158 were never going to be enough on this pitch. We saw how quickly England completed the chase,” he said.
Indian bowlers were clueless despite Arshdeep Singh taking Jos Buttler’s wicket. Shivam Dube and Axar Patel leaked runs, with Harry Brook and Phil Salt dominating the bowling attack. Washington Sundar, who was dropped from the team after the first T20I in Ireland, was recalled for the game, but he conceded 19 runs in the 8th over. Prince Yadav and Prasidh Krishna were also not spared.
“I told my bowlers to repeat the lengths as it was not easy to score boundaries if they bowled top of middle-stump and leg-stump. We lacked in execution. We relied on changing pace and trying something different. They score off the loose balls,” Iyer added.
India kept losing wickets in the first innings, and it was Iyer who took the score above the 150-run mark. He scored an unbeaten 80 off 49 balls. “I am happy with my performance, but it didn’t come in the winning cause. I am not pleased, as whenever I perform, I want to see my team winning the game. It didn’t happen today. Looking forward to the next game,” he mentioned.
Iyer used the word transition after the team’s second T20I series defeat. “This is the transition phase, and we are making mistakes. The youngsters are playing in these conditions for the first time. So they will commit mistakes. It is important to realise that we need to adapt to the conditions and have game awareness in the overseas conditions.”
“It is important to learn from your mistakes quickly so that you can contribute. I am sure players are quick learners, and they will get back stronger in the last game.”
