Kylian Mbappe was taken off as a precaution during France’s 2-0 victory over Morocco in the World Cup quarter-final on Thursday.
The France captain, who has now drawn level with Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot race with eight goals, produced a brilliant strike in the second half after missing a penalty earlier in the first half at Boston.
Soon after scoring, Mbappe was fouled by Morocco defender Issa Diop, who received a yellow card for the challenge. The French forward appeared to be in some discomfort following the tackle.
France head coach Didier Deschamps opted not to take any risks, substituting Mbappe in the 78th minute for Jean-Philippe Mateta. By that stage, Les Bleus had already secured a 2-0 advantage thanks to a goal from Ousmane Dembele.
Mbappe was later seen on the substitutes’ bench with an ice pack strapped to his ankle, though he did not appear overly worried. France now have five days to prepare for their semi-final clash against either Spain or Belgium.
The Real Madrid forward also joined in the post-match celebrations without showing any visible sign of discomfort from the ankle knock, easing concerns among French fans about his fitness ahead of the next round.
