The African teams that bowed out of the 2026 World Cup did so in heartbreaking fashion, conceding late goals in their knockout matches but earning admiration for their performances.

The 2026 World Cup has been a resounding success for African football, though the nature of their exits will surely leave a bitter taste.

Several African nations advanced impressively to the knockout rounds, proving that teams from the continent can compete at the highest level. Yet, their departures were marked by agonising moments that tested the resilience of players and fans alike.

From Egypt’s controversial defeat to Argentina to DR Congo’s narrow loss to England, here are the precise moments when each African side conceded the goal that ended their World Cup journey in the knockout stages.

Remarkably, not a single African team conceded the decisive goal before the 86th minute throughout the tournament across North America.

Each side pushed their higher-ranked opponents to the limit, only to suffer the most painful of defeats in the final minutes.

DR Congo had taken a 1-0 lead against England and held firm for more than 70 minutes before conceding in the 86th minute to crash out.

Ivory Coast experienced a similar heartbreak, remaining level until Erling Haaland struck home the winner in the 86th minute.

South Africa’s campaign ended in dramatic fashion as they were level with co-hosts Canada until a 91st-minute goal from the edge of the area ended their hopes.

Senegal’s story was even more crushing. Leading Belgium 2-0 beyond the 80th minute, they conceded twice late on to force extra time, only for a 125th-minute penalty from Youri Tielemans to seal their fate.

Perhaps the most disputed moments came in Argentina’s matches against Cape Verde and Egypt, with the latter encounter sparking intense conspiracy theories that dominated discussions during the tournament.

Against Cape Verde, Argentina were pushed into extra time after the island nation twice came from behind, before finally winning through a 111th-minute goal.

In their clash with Egypt, the 2022 World Cup champions trailed for nearly 80 minutes before netting two goals in quick succession to level the score at 2-2.

A 92nd-minute strike then ended Egypt’s dream run, following two denied penalty appeals and a VAR decision that ruled out a stunning goal for the Pharaohs earlier in the half.

The minutes when each of the six eliminated African teams conceded the goals that ended their World Cup campaigns: 86', 86', 91', 92', 111', 125'.
