Newcastle United shortlist two midfielders as possible successors to Bruno Guimaraes amid Arsenal interest

Newcastle United are reportedly preparing for the possible departure of their captain Bruno Guimaraes, with two midfielders identified as potential replacements.

Reports on Wednesday revealed that the Brazilian midfielder has informed club officials of his desire to explore a move away from St James’ Park this summer.

Arsenal are understood to be readying an offer for the Magpies’ skipper, having already communicated their interest to both the player and the club. However, any potential deal is expected to command a significant transfer fee.

Despite Newcastle’s insistence that Guimaraes is not for sale, the situation mirrors last summer’s transfer saga involving Alexander Isak, who eventually secured a move to Liverpool after initially being deemed untouchable by the club.

With Sandro Tonali having already completed a transfer to Tottenham Hotspur earlier this summer, it would be surprising to see both key midfielders depart within the same window. Nevertheless, Newcastle appear to be bracing for that scenario.

According to a report from The Athletic, Monaco’s Lamine Camara and Auxerre’s Kevin Danois — both aged 22 — have been long-term targets for Newcastle and are being considered as possible replacements for Guimaraes.

The Magpies are said to have drawn up a comprehensive list of potential signings should any first-team players leave. The report adds that the club plans to swiftly bring in reinforcements in the event of departures.

Meanwhile, the club is expected to confirm the signing of Ajax youngster Sean Steur in the coming days. Newcastle are also lining up a move for Johan Manzambi, who has caught the eye with his performances for Switzerland at the World Cup. The signing will likely be finalised once Switzerland’s campaign concludes.

In addition to these moves, Newcastle have already secured the services of 20-year-olds Bazoumana Toure and Ewen Jaouen this transfer window. The influx of young talent suggests that the team’s lineup on the opening day of next season will look markedly different — and considerably younger — compared to the end of the last campaign.

Newcastle’s summer overhaul has also seen the departure of winger Anthony Gordon, who joined Barcelona in a high-profile transfer, while former captain Kieran Trippier has completed a move to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

With several key changes already in motion, all eyes will be on how Newcastle rebuild their squad for the upcoming Premier League season.
