Smartphone Addiction: Until now, concerns were raised about children's phone use. Now, a study has revealed that parents' phone use has a negative impact on children.
Smartphone Addiction: Parents' phone habits have a direct impact on children.
Smartphone Addiction: Whenever there is talk of smartphone addiction or screen time, most of the time this discussion is about children. But now a study has revealed that along with children, the habits of their parents also matter a lot. For parents who remain busy on the phone all day, their emotional bond with their children gets weakened. This affects the development and minds of the children. Most of the teenagers aged 12-17 years included in the study said that when their parents are engrossed in the phone, they feel as if they are being ignored or sidelined.
What effect does parental phone use have on children?
Researchers in this study, published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology, found that excessive parental or caregiver use of phones can lead to insecure attachment. Insecure attachment is a pattern that can make children anxious and less confident in forming relationships later in life. If not addressed early, these issues can affect children well into adulthood.
Are digital devices weakening relationships?
This study comes at a time when research on "technoference" is steadily increasing. Simply put, technoference means that digital devices are weakening real relationships. Previous studies focused on the impact of digital devices on romantic relationships, but recent research shows that they are also impacting relationships between children and parents. It's also strange that until now, the debate has centered on children's screen time, but this new study has changed the narrative entirely.
Physically present, but mind elsewhere
Researchers say that while parents are physically present with digital devices, their attention and mind are often elsewhere. A 2024 survey in the US confirmed this. Most children surveyed said their parents' attention is focused on their phones during conversations, while only a few admitted this.
