Delhi Health Report: Delhi's government report revealed information about a reduction in the neonatal mortality rate, an increase in the maternal mortality rate, and improvement in education, environment, and employment.
Delhi government report raises concerns.
Delhi Health Report: The Delhi government recently released a report, titled "Delhi State Indicator Framework: Status Report 2025," to monitor Delhi's progress toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. The government aims to use this report to help policymakers identify areas where improvements have been made and where work still needs to be done.
Newborn mortality rates decreased; maternal mortality increased.
According to the report, Delhi has seen an improvement in the neonatal mortality rate. In 2015, the neonatal mortality rate in Delhi was 15.8 per 1,000 live births, which has declined to 14.1 by 2024. However, the maternal mortality rate figures are also worrying. In 2015, 37 women died per 100,000 live births, which has now increased to 44. This increase has occurred despite the fact that the number of women giving birth under medical supervision in hospitals and health centers has increased from 84.4 percent in 2015 to 96.1 percent in 2024.
In addition to health, the report also highlights improvements in education, poverty, and employment. Electricity and digital services are now available almost universally in Delhi schools, while the number of students enrolled in higher education has also increased. However, data on child nutrition remains mixed, as the long-standing problem of malnutrition has decreased, but the number of underweight children has remained unchanged.
Improvements on the environmental front too
Delhi has also made significant progress in the environmental field. For example, waste management has improved, and more waste is now being disposed of properly. Air pollution has also decreased slightly compared to ten years ago, although it still remains well above established standards. Additionally, the number of electric vehicles in Delhi has rapidly increased, from just 24,420 in 2015-16 to over 400,000 by 2024-25. An official said that overall, Delhi has made significant progress in many social and environmental areas, but maternal and neonatal mortality data show that maternal and child health still needs further attention.
