Newly released police records are providing details about the circumstances surrounding ' Storage Wars ' star Darrell Sheets ' passing in April. Authorities discovered a handwritten note that offered insight into Sheets' state of mind before his death, along with documentation of significant family tensions in the days preceding the incident.
According to the Lake Havasu City Police incident report obtained by TMZ, detectives found the note tucked inside a black basket in a bathroom closet near where Sheets was discovered. Police summarized the contents as reading, "I could not take anymore the Facebook bullying , f*** you [redacted]," with investigators noting that the handwriting appeared shaky, suggesting emotional distress at the time of writing.
Final night and family tensionsThe police report paints a detailed picture of Sheets' final evening. His girlfriend told detectives that Sheets could not sleep and got out of bed in the middle of the night. Moments later, she found him standing in the doorway of his office. He told her to "go back to bed" before a single gunshot rang out.
Police documentation also detailed significant family tension in the days preceding his death. Sheets' girlfriend reported to investigators that his son had recently visited, and the two engaged in a heated verbal argument regarding "family drama" before the son's departure.
The girlfriend told investigators that tensions only escalated following the visit. She claimed Sheets received text messages from his daughter-in-law accusing her of being suspicious and stealing money from him, an accusation that left Sheets visibly upset.
Escalating arguments and emotional tollIn a subsequent interview, the girlfriend described how arguments between Sheets and his son became increasingly intense. She stated she left the house at one point because Sheets' son was yelling at Sheets. She reported that Sheets told her he did not want to be alone with his son and described him as feeling "sad as hell" following the visit, as though he had let his son down.
Long-standing sleep issues and stressInvestigators also documented that Sheets had been battling severe insomnia for several months. His girlfriend indicated he was under tremendous stress and frequently could not sleep. However she insisted that Sheets had never discussed harming himself and characterized their relationship as strong in the weeks preceding his passing.
His son, Brandon Sheets , later addressed the public with an emotional tribute to his father. "The best dad a son could ask for," Brandon stated in describing Darrell, before announcing his intention to reopen his father's Arizona business to continue the family enterprise.
Online bullying as contributing factorSheets' mention of online bullying in the suicide note has drawn attention, particularly given previous reports from fellow 'Storage Wars' cast members. Fellow cast member Rene Nezhoda claimed that Sheets was dealing with relentless online bullying before his passing, a claim that police investigated during their inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his death.
The documentation reveals a complex picture of an individual struggling with multiple compounding stressors, including chronic sleep deprivation family conflict and persistent online harassment , all of which contributed to his deteriorating mental state in the weeks before his passing.
