Norway’s medical team has provided a clear update on concerns about a possible sickness bug within the squad ahead of their crucial World Cup quarter-final clash against England on Saturday. Following speculation after their win over Brazil, the team’s doctor has confirmed that all players are fit and ready. Meanwhile, both sides are bracing for challenging weather conditions, with forecasts warning of intense heat and thunderstorms in Miami.
Team doctor denies illness concerns
After reports emerged about a virus circulating through the camp, Norway’s team doctor Ola Sand has refuted any worries ahead of the World Cup quarter-final in Miami. The speculation began after head coach Stale Solbakken mentioned that players such as Marcus Pedersen and Jorgen Strand Larsen had experienced minor health issues following their 2-1 win over Brazil.
Speaking to Norwegian outlet Nettavisen, Sand said the entire squad is currently in good health. “All players are healthy now,” he confirmed. “Very little trouble considering we have been together closely for almost six weeks. So it’s amusing that they think this [the sickness bug rumour]. We have things under control.”
Solbakken sheds light on player conditions
Initial concerns were triggered by Solbakken during his post-match press conference in New Jersey. The Norway boss spoke about the physical toll of covering long distances across the United States. He revealed that Strand Larsen had suffered from a fever, while Pedersen felt unwell on the morning of the Brazil game.
Offering further details, Solbakken explained: “We’ve really only had Jorgen who had a fever. But there’s been some coughing and rasping here and there. With air conditioning, flights, dressing rooms and all that, it’s understandable. We’re over 50 people, so it would be odd if someone didn’t come down with something.”
Weather challenges loom over Miami fixture
Beyond Norway’s health situation, both teams are preparing for extreme weather in Miami on Saturday. Temperatures are expected to rise to around 35 degrees Celsius, which could seriously impact player performance. Additionally, forecasts indicate a chance of isolated thunderstorms that could interrupt the match schedule.
Thomas Tuchel and the England squad have already dealt with adverse weather conditions, having faced a delayed kick-off against Mexico in their 3-2 victory due to lightning. England also managed intense heat during their 2-1 win over DR Congo. With Reece James and Jordan Henderson still managing injuries, Tuchel’s side will need to balance fitness carefully against a Norway team that heavily depends on Erling Haaland’s form.
Looking ahead to the quarter-final
As Saturday’s match draws near, both countries are racing to ensure their top players are in peak condition for this high-stakes World Cup quarter-final. England will look to sustain their strong run under Tuchel and move closer to the coveted trophy, while Norway will aim to recover from travel fatigue and pull off another major upset under the Miami heat.
