Paul Pogba’s time at AS Monaco could be coming to an end, with the club’s management acknowledging that the World Cup-winning midfielder may be sold this summer. After a debut campaign in Ligue 1 heavily affected by injuries, the former Manchester United star is no longer viewed as an indispensable part of the project at the Stade Louis II.

Monaco director comments on Pogba’s potential departure

General manager Thiago Scuro has added fuel to speculation about Pogba’s future by revealing that the Frenchman could leave during the ongoing transfer window. Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Scuro confirmed that the club is reassessing Pogba’s position as he approaches the final year of his contract.

Asked whether the 33-year-old was likely to move on, Scuro offered a candid response: “Yes, of course. Maybe he will leave, maybe he will stay. It’s a very complicated subject. We have a lot of respect for him as a person first. When he arrived, he brought a positive attitude and helped younger players. But the reality is that the project involving him didn’t work well last season. Our expectations were quite different when we started.”

Filipe Luis to decide Pogba’s fate

The arrival of new head coach Filipe Luis has changed the dynamics for several senior players, Pogba included. The former Atletico Madrid and Chelsea defender officially began first-team training on Monday and will use the pre-season period to identify which players align with his tactical approach for the upcoming campaign.

Pogba’s fitness remains the main concern for the coaching staff after a difficult season in which he featured in only six matches and played just 115 minutes for Monaco. Persistent thigh, calf, and ankle injuries restricted his availability. Monaco’s seventh-place finish means they will compete in the UEFA Europa Conference League next season. With this in mind, the pre-season will serve as a crucial assessment period for Pogba, with Luis holding the final say on whether the midfielder stays as part of his squad or is sold to ease financial pressures.

Fitness and performance under review

Scuro stressed that any decision on Pogba’s future will depend purely on his performances during the high-intensity pre-season training. The club will be looking for signs that he can regain the physical and technical sharpness that once made him the world’s most expensive footballer during his Manchester United days. This evaluation comes after a challenging few years for Pogba, who mutually ended his contract with Juventus in November 2024 before signing a two-year deal with Monaco in June 2025. His debut for the French side in November 2025 marked his first competitive outing in 811 days, following an 18-month suspension for a doping violation involving DHEA.

“I think we have to be fair to him now,” Scuro told reporters. “We need to monitor his preparation each week, observe how he is progressing physically and technically. After that, it will be the coach’s decision whether Filipe Luis gives him playing time or not. We have the entire summer to evaluate Paul’s level.”

Financial strain at the Stade Louis II

Aside from sporting considerations, Monaco are also under financial scrutiny. With France’s football financial body, the DNCG, keeping a close watch on the club’s finances, management is under pressure to reduce the wage bill. Pogba’s substantial salary makes him a likely candidate for an exit if he cannot secure a regular starting place.

The club is also exploring the possibility of moving on other senior players to comply with financial regulations. Reports indicate that Pogba is not the only big name potentially leaving, with former Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier also mentioned as a possible departure as Monaco aim to refresh the squad and lower overall spending ahead of the new season.
