Manchester United are reportedly on the verge of receiving a substantial financial boost, with Mason Greenwood close to completing a move to Fenerbahce.

Greenwood, who came through the Manchester United academy, was once regarded as a key part of the club’s long-term plans. However, the club decided to part ways with him before the start of the 2023/24 season.

The 24-year-old left Manchester United after being charged with attempted rape and assault, which led to the club launching an internal investigation.

Although the Crown Prosecution Service later dropped the case after several key witnesses withdrew, significantly reducing the chances of conviction, Manchester United opted against reinstating the player due to potential public relations fallout.

Following his departure, Greenwood began rebuilding his career in Europe. He first joined Getafe on loan before securing a permanent transfer to Marseille.

Marseille signed Greenwood for approximately £26 million, a figure below his market value, but Manchester United negotiated a 50% sell-on clause in the deal.

Over two seasons with the French side, Greenwood registered 48 goals and 17 assists in 81 appearances. Despite his strong performances, reports suggest he has clashed with senior figures at the club, prompting Marseille to consider offers for him during the current transfer window.

Initially, Serie A giants AS Roma were seen as favourites to sign the English forward, but Turkish powerhouse Fenerbahce have now taken the lead in the race for his signature.

According to a report from French outlet Foot Mercato, an agreement between Marseille and Fenerbahce is “rapidly approaching,” with the Turkish club prepared to meet Marseille’s financial demands.

The report stated: “Fenerbahçe is rapidly approaching an agreement with Olympique de Marseille for the transfer of Mason Greenwood. The Turkish club is currently meeting the demands set by the French club and hopes to finalise the deal within the next 48 hours. Fenerbahçe’s last offer of €30 million plus bonuses was previously rejected by Marseille, who are seeking a larger fee for the Englishman.”

Journalist Nicolo Schira has also reported that Greenwood has “opened the door” to a move to Fenerbahce, who have tabled a “huge bid” to secure his services.

Schira wrote: “Mason Greenwood has opened the door to Fenerbahçe and has given his availability to join the Turkish club after their huge offer in recent hours. Fenerbahçe are now working to reach an agreement with Olympique Marseille, who continue to demand €50–55 million for the forward.”

In a further update, Schira added: “Fenerbahçe have offered Mason Greenwood a salary of €8 million per year plus bonuses on a long-term contract and are currently in negotiations with Olympique Marseille to finalise the deal.”

If Marseille manage to secure a transfer worth €55 million (approximately £47 million) for Greenwood, Manchester United would be entitled to around £23.5 million from the agreement due to the sell-on clause.
