England midfielder Jordan Henderson has shared an update from his hospital bed after suffering a freak injury following the Round of 16 clash against Mexico.

Although Henderson did not play in the match, he sustained a broken left arm after slipping and landing awkwardly while attempting to jump over an advertising board on the pitch.

As his England teammates flew to Miami in high spirits after their hard-fought victory over Mexico, Henderson stayed behind in Mexico City to receive medical treatment.

The midfielder has since been transferred to the Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute in the United States, where he underwent surgery on his injured arm.

The operation was successful, and Henderson is now recovering and eager to continue supporting his England teammates for the remainder of the tournament.

In a photo shared from his hospital bed, Henderson gave a thumbs-up alongside the three surgeons who performed the procedure—Dr. Kenneth P. Unruh, Dr. Mark J. Winston, and Dr. Kirk McCullough.

He captioned the update: “Surgery done! Let’s get ready for the big one Saturday.”

He added his gratitude to the medical staff, saying: “Thank you to all the staff who took care of me at the Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute, especially the three surgeons who carried out the operation.”

Henderson is now ruled out for the quarter-finals and the rest of the World Cup, should England progress beyond Norway. Though disappointed to miss the remainder of the competition, Henderson can take pride in having become the only England men’s player to represent the Three Lions at seven major tournaments, following his appearance in the 2-0 Group L win over Panama.

The veteran midfielder made his tournament debut for England at Euro 2012 and scored his first international goal at Euro 2020, contributing to the 4-0 quarter-final victory against Ukraine.

Henderson is expected to rejoin the England squad once he is discharged from hospital. His father, Brian Henderson, told the Daily Mail: “He won’t be leaving his teammates. He’ll stay with them until it’s finished.”

Brian also clarified that the injury was more severe than initially reported, explaining: “It’s his left forearm — he’s completely smashed it.”
