Manchester United could find themselves trailing in the heated chase for Morgan Rogers, as Arsenal prepare to make the first decisive move for the Aston Villa sensation, according to the latest reports.

Although Bruno Fernandes continues to play with the energy and hunger of a youngster making his debut, the Manchester United captain will turn 32 in September. Time eventually catches up with everyone, even players with his remarkable drive and endurance.

Officials at Old Trafford reportedly view Rogers as a potential long-term replacement for Fernandes, while also believing the two could feature together in the same lineup.

Rogers, who has been starring for England at the World Cup, has proven himself to be a versatile asset for both Thomas Tuchel and his club manager, Unai Emery. Equally comfortable on either flank or operating centrally as a No.10, he combines exceptional dribbling and ball-carrying with a 6'2'' frame that adds power and pace—qualities that make him an ideal modern Premier League attacker.

Since joining Aston Villa from Middlesbrough in 2024, where he played under Michael Carrick, Rogers has delivered 31 goals and 29 assists in 125 appearances. That equates to roughly one goal contribution every two games, including 26 across all competitions last season.

Following a fourth-place Premier League finish and a Europa League triumph secured with a 3-0 victory over SC Freiburg, Aston Villa are understandably reluctant to part ways with their star player.

Nevertheless, there is growing recognition in Birmingham that this summer might be the most opportune time to command a premium transfer fee for Rogers. The player himself is reportedly eager for a move, as top English clubs and major European sides closely monitor developments.

Manchester United have a few advantages in their pursuit. Rogers previously worked under Carrick at Middlesbrough, and sporting director Jason Wilcox also has a connection from their time together in Manchester City’s academy. Both Carrick and Wilcox are known admirers of the Halesowen-born forward, confident he could eventually take over Fernandes’ creative mantle.

However, competition for Rogers is fierce. Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester City have all shown interest this summer, while European champions Paris Saint-Germain are also believed to be keen.

It is Arsenal, though—fresh off claiming their first Premier League title in 22 years—who are pressing hardest for a deal. Mikel Arteta reportedly views Rogers as a key target to strengthen his attacking options, which, despite the team’s success, occasionally lacked flair and innovation last season.

According to TEAMtalk, the Gunners are preparing an “official approach” to Aston Villa after making “significant” progress in discussions with the player’s representatives. The report adds that Rogers views the Emirates Stadium as his “preferred destination.”

Publicly, Villa maintain that their prized asset is not for sale. Privately, however, they acknowledge that a deal could be struck at the right price. The Midlands club are expected to point to Manchester City’s £116 million transfer of Elliot Anderson as a benchmark during negotiations.

Sources within Villa Park suggest that any deal for Rogers would require a “record-breaking fee,” with the club aiming to make him the most expensive English player in history.

The same report notes that Liverpool and Manchester United are “continu[ing] to monitor developments closely and have kept themselves informed over the situation.” Chelsea and Manchester City remain in contention as well, though Arsenal are widely seen as leading the race.

While Manchester United’s immediate focus this summer is a major midfield overhaul, their recruitment team is also exploring options further up the pitch. Strengthening the left wing is a priority, while they also seek a more consistent striker than Joshua Zirkzee. Rogers could be an ideal solution for the former, potentially enabling Matheus Cunha to shift into a central role—the same position he excelled in for Brazil during the World Cup.

Although it seems unlikely that the Red Devils will make a record-breaking bid, Rogers would undoubtedly represent a transformative signing—one capable of taking Carrick’s attacking unit to new heights while providing a natural heir to Fernandes at the Theatre of Dreams.
