New Delhi: The debate regarding mixing 20 percent ethanol (E20) in petrol has intensified in the country. On one hand, the government is calling it a big step towards reducing fuel imports and reducing pollution, while on the other hand, some vehicle owners are expressing concern about the impact of this fuel on their vehicles. Amidst this controversy, a 22-year-old Parliament speech of former Petroleum Minister Mani Shankar Aiyer is becoming increasingly viral on social media.
Why is the old video going viral?
The viral video is said to be from the year 2005. Speaking in Parliament at that time, Mani Shankar Aiyar had said that the government will take forward the plan to mix ethanol in petrol. He said jokingly that "First drink less alcohol, because a large part of the ethanol goes there. Whatever is left will be used in petrol." This statement has now again become a topic of discussion on social media.
Why is there a debate on E20 fuel?
The aim of the central government is to reduce dependence on foreign oil and reduce pollution by mixing 20 percent ethanol in petrol. However, some people claim that excessive ethanol blending can affect the engine and fuel system of old vehicles. In recent times, many videos have also surfaced on social media, in which claims of damage to vehicles have been made.
The matter reached the Supreme Court
The matter to ethanol policy has now reached the Supreme Court also. During the hearing, the central government told the court that the E20 program is still in the testing and evaluation phase. The government says that a clear assessment of the impact of this policy will come out by next year.
Government’s focus on alternative fuel
Meanwhile, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has said that in future, trucks and buses running on hydrogen will also be seen on the roads of the country. He said that the government is promoting clean fuels like electric, flex-fuel and hydrogen, so that pollution is reduced and dependence on imported fuel is reduced.
At present the debate regarding ethanol mixed petrol is still going on. In the coming time, the direction and impact of this scheme will become more clear on the basis of government policy, suggestions of vehicle companies and scientific tests.
