Just a couple of weeks ago, automotive enthusiasts in the United States received disappointing news: Polestar, the Swedish electric vehicle brand owned by China’s Geely, announced its planned exit from the U.S. market. The decision came after the company was denied a waiver to bypass the U.S. Department of Commerce’s new regulations concerning “connected vehicles.” This ruling effectively prohibits Polestar from selling vehicles manufactured after the 2027 model year in the U.S., meaning American buyers will only be able to purchase remaining stock of existing models. Unfortunately, this also implies that the latest addition to Polestar’s lineup, the new variant of the Polestar 4, is unlikely to reach American shores anytime soon—a real loss for EV enthusiasts there.
The new model, referred to as the 4 SUV, is scheduled for an official unveiling soon. Based on teaser images released in February and again on Tuesday, along with the silhouette and dimensions of the current model, the upcoming Polestar 4 version featuring a rear window seems to lean more towards a traditional two-box wagon design than a raised crossover. The most notable update compared to the existing Polestar 4 is precisely that rear window—undoing one of the more controversial design decisions made for the current coupe-like hatchback version sold in the U.S. and other markets.

According to Polestar’s official statement, the upcoming 4 SUV will deliver a “refined driving experience” compared to the standard 4, thanks to “retuned chassis dynamics.” Both range and performance have been marginally enhanced, with the single-motor variant gaining an additional 21 miles of range under the WLTP testing cycle compared to the longest-range Polestar 4 currently available. The dual-motor version, meanwhile, is set to produce up to 544 horsepower, as confirmed by the company’s release.
Polestar has announced that the 4 SUV will become available to customers starting September 2nd and will be sold across “a majority of Polestar markets.” However, unless the recent U.S. policy decision is somehow reversed, the United States will soon no longer be counted among those markets—a disappointing outcome for fans hoping to experience Polestar’s latest EV innovation firsthand.
