Spanish manager Alvaro Arbeloa has been confirmed as Fulham’s new head coach, marking his move to west London after a challenging tenure at Real Madrid.
Fulham were left searching for a new leader when former boss Marco Silva chose to leave the club at the end of last season, opting to replace Jose Mourinho at Benfica instead. His exit sparked widespread speculation about who would take over at Craven Cottage, with Arne Slot and Kieran McKenna among the names linked to the role. Ultimately, Arbeloa emerged as the chosen candidate.
The 41-year-old has signed a three-year contract that will keep him at Fulham until the summer of 2029. A former player with Real Madrid, Liverpool, and West Ham, Arbeloa also lifted the FIFA World Cup with Spain, adding to his impressive list of achievements on the pitch.
However, his early steps into management have been less smooth. Arbeloa’s only previous experience as a head coach came during a turbulent six-month spell in charge of Real Madrid’s first team. He began his coaching journey with Real Madrid’s B team in 2025 before being promoted to lead the senior side in January following the dismissal of Xabi Alonso.
Interestingly, Alonso has since become the manager of Fulham’s west London rivals Chelsea, meaning Arbeloa’s first Premier League match in charge will see him face his former colleague on the opposite bench.
Reports from Spain indicated that Arbeloa’s short stint at the Santiago Bernabeu was marred by internal disagreements with several players, and the season concluded without any silverware. Despite that, he now has a chance to rebuild his managerial reputation in the Premier League with a Fulham side that finished last season just one point shy of European qualification.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Arbeloa expressed his excitement at the new opportunity: “It is a real honour for me to begin this new chapter at Fulham FC, the oldest club in London. I am eager to feel the atmosphere at Craven Cottage with Fulham supporters and to start pre-season training with the players next week. I am confident we are going to enjoy an incredible journey together.”
Fulham’s owner Shahid Khan praised Arbeloa’s credentials, noting that the Spaniard “built an exceptional case” during the interview process in June. Khan added: “I am delighted that Alvaro has accepted the challenge to push Fulham forward. I have no doubt that our players, staff, and fans will connect with what his appointment means for the present and future of our club.”
