Rodri has reached out to his former Manchester City teammate Bernardo Silva with an apology following a heated exchange that occurred at the conclusion of Spain’s World Cup knockout victory against Portugal.

The tense moment briefly overshadowed Spain’s thrilling 1-0 win in Dallas, a result that propelled La Roja into the quarter-finals while ending Portugal’s journey in the tournament.

Merino clinches victory for Spain

Spain booked their place in the quarter-finals thanks to a dramatic 91st-minute goal scored by substitute Mikel Merino, sealing a 1-0 triumph over Portugal in their last-16 clash in Dallas. However, the celebrations were marred when midfielder Rodri’s provocative reaction triggered a heated confrontation with Bernardo Silva. The incident reflected the emotional intensity of high-stakes international football, testing the composure and sportsmanship of both world-class players.

Rodri issues public apology

Rodri, who controlled the midfield with 106 touches and 87 successful passes, quickly moved to calm tensions after the match. The Ballon d’Or winner admitted his fault, explaining that he had reacted inappropriately by celebrating Silva’s missed chance — an action he immediately regretted.

Speaking to the media afterwards, Rodri said, “I’ve said this before, I made a mistake because I celebrated when he had failed. I apologised to him immediately, but that’s where it stands because of the trust we have, and that’s it.”

Portugal facing a new chapter

Bernardo Silva’s missed header in the closing moments added to Portugal’s frustration on a night that ended in disappointment. Questions now loom over Cristiano Ronaldo’s international future following the team’s elimination. In the aftermath of the defeat, Euro 2016-winning coach Roberto Martinez announced his resignation, signalling the beginning of a new era for the national side. Veteran manager Jorge Jesus has already emerged as the leading contender to take over the managerial role as Portugal begins its transition.

Spain prepare for Belgium challenge

Spain will now turn their attention to a quarter-final clash against Belgium in Los Angeles on Friday, July 10. Coach Luis de la Fuente’s team will be aiming to enhance their attacking sharpness after struggling to convert chances during a sluggish second half against Portugal. Sustaining midfield control will be vital as they look to neutralise Belgium’s fast-paced counter-attacking style.
