The Monterey Five are officially getting the band back together. After years of vague teasers, false starts, and “will they, won’t they” speculation, HBO has officially greenlit Big Little Lies Season 3.
While the sudden passing of Season 1 director Jean-Marc Vallée in 2021 initially cast doubt on the show’s future, producers Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon have successfully rallied the team for a brand-new chapter.
Production & Release Timeline
Current Status: HBO has officially greenlit the season. Scripts are actively being written by Francesca Sloane to align with the new book’s launch.
Filming Window: Series creator David E. Kelley confirmed that the team expects cameras to officially start rolling on location in the fall of 2026.
Expected Premiere: Because of the late 2026 filming schedule, a release this year is out. Season 3 is tracking for a mid-to-late 2027 premiere on HBO and Max.
Cast Updates
The Returning Duos: Executive producers and stars Nicole Kidman (Celeste) and Reese Witherspoon (Madeline) are officially locked in.
The Rest of the Five: Shailene Woodley (Jane) heavily teased their return on social media with a cast photo captioned “We ARE so back.” Laura Dern (Renata) and Zoë Kravitz (Bonnie) have both expressed total commitment to returning as well.
The Next Generation: Because of the decade-long time jump, the actors who played the young Monterey kids will be returning as fully grown high schoolers, alongside a batch of new casting calls for fresh faces in the school district.
What to Expect From the Plot
The Teen Era: The peaceful days of elementary school playdates are long gone. The Monterey kids are now dealing with the complicated, messy realities of high school, complete with adolescent rebellion, drinking, and digital drama.
A New Threat: According to early outlines of Big Little Truths, the town is thrown into chaos when a mysterious stranger begins hanging around the high school asking deeply invasive questions about the past.
The Severed Clue: The main mystery kicks off in bizarre fashion when the high school principal receives a severed human finger in the mail, forcing the core women to confront the long-term fallout of the lies they’ve kept hidden from the police and their own children.
