Argentina produced a stunning late comeback to defeat Egypt 3-2 in Atlanta, with Enzo Fernández heading a stoppage-time winner to keep their World Cup title defence alive.

The reigning champions looked to be heading out when they trailed 2-0 with just over 10 minutes remaining. Yasser Ibrahim had given Egypt a surprise half-time lead, and after Lionel Messi saw a penalty saved, Mostafa Zico doubled Egypt's advantage in the 67th minute – having earlier had a goal ruled out by VAR.

Argentina mounted a desperate fightback. Cristian Romero headed in from Messi's cross in the 79th minute to give Argentina hope, before Messi equalised four minutes later with his eighth goal of the tournament and his 21st in World Cups overall.

Then, in the second minute of added time, Fernández raced into the box to head Lautaro Martínez's cross into the top corner, completing a remarkable turnaround and sending Argentina through to the next round.

Egypt had taken a 15th-minute lead when Ibrahim headed home Marwan Attia's cross. Messi's penalty was saved by goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir soon after, before Zico's second-half strike put Egypt 2-0 up, although he had previously been denied by VAR for a foul in the build-up.

Argentina survived a major scare before Romero's header set up a dramatic finale, and Fernández's late winner secured their place in the quarter-finals as they continue their pursuit of a second consecutive World Cup title.
