Natural Gas (Supply Regulation) Order
Amidst the domestic cooking gas crisis, the Government of India implemented the Natural Gas (Supply Regulation) Order on March 9, 2026. Under this order, the supply, allocation, distribution, and use of LPG (liquefied petroleum gas), LNG (liquefied natural gas), and re-gasified LNG were regulated.

What was the purpose of imposing emergency controls on gas supply?
The purpose of imposing emergency controls on gas supply was to ensure adequate gas supply to various sectors, including power and fertilizer, so that essential and emergency services would not be affected. The government has now reversed the order and implemented new rules.

Changes in Gas Production and Distribution Rules
On July 4, 2026, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) issued a new order officially ending government control over gas production and distribution under the Natural Gas (Supply Regulation) (Amendment) Order 2026.

Gas will be available in all sectors and areas.
Under the new order, LPG will now be available in all sectors. There are no restrictions on supply and use, whereas the government previously implemented strict regulations on the supply and distribution of natural gas and LNG to prevent misuse.
