U.S. Soccer has confirmed that discussions about Mauricio Pochettino’s future as head coach will resume following a period of rest and consideration after the U.S. Men’s National Team’s (USMNT) World Cup elimination. The United States bowed out of the tournament after a 4-1 defeat to Belgium on Monday, ending their campaign and possibly concluding Pochettino’s tenure with the national team.
The situation
In the aftermath of the World Cup exit, Pochettino was questioned about whether he would continue in charge of the USMNT. The Argentine tactician declined to give a definitive answer, explaining that any decision would only be made once emotions had settled and after some time away from the game.
“In the next few weeks, we can begin discussions if the federation wishes to,” Pochettino stated. “At the moment, it’s time to rest, to think, and to have conversations with the federation to determine the next steps. I’m very happy. We’ve established an excellent relationship. Now isn’t the right time to talk about the future.”
On Tuesday, U.S. Soccer released an official statement that mirrored Pochettino’s sentiments about taking time before making any decisions.
U.S. Soccer’s statement
“We held positive discussions with Mauricio before the World Cup regarding the future,” the federation said in its statement. “We agreed to revisit those conversations following a period of rest and reflection after the tournament. We hold a great deal of respect and gratitude for Mauricio, his staff, and everyone involved in the program.
“We share enthusiasm about our potential and also a clear understanding of the significant work that remains across all levels to achieve our ambitions.”
Pochettino’s contract status
Pochettino took over as the USMNT manager in the autumn of 2024 on a deal that ran through the World Cup. During his time in charge, he has been linked with several European clubs and has openly acknowledged his ambition to return to English football one day. Nonetheless, he has also expressed openness to continuing his role with the USMNT if circumstances were favourable after the World Cup.
In the lead-up to this summer’s tournament, both Pochettino and U.S. Soccer’s CEO, JT Batson, confirmed that discussions had already taken place about potentially extending their partnership.
“We’ve had several in-depth discussions about what the next four years could look like,” Batson said in May. “We’re enthusiastic, and they are too. But, of course, our current focus has to be on the summer, and that’s where our attention is.”
He further added: “We have plans in place for renewals, interim options, and replacements because in global football, you can never predict what might happen. This is part of U.S. Soccer continuing to mature as an organisation.”
What lies ahead?
With the World Cup now concluded, the next fixtures for the USMNT are scheduled during the international window from 21 September to 6 October.
