After the completion of eighteen years of age, the youth is eager to get the vehicle license. Often we go to the RTO and apply for the license in a hurry. But, a small mistake on the license while applying can lead to huge legal pain in the future. Two-wheeler licenses are mainly of two types—one for non-geared vehicles (like Activa, Jupiter) and the other for geared vehicles (like Splendor, Pulsar). So, let’s understand the exact differences between these two licenses and common mistakes.
1. Gearless Vehicles vs Geared Vehicles
According to Regional Transport Office regulations, there are two main classifications of two-wheeler licences:
- Gearless bike- This license is mainly issued for driving mopeds or scooters with automatic gear. Cars that do not need to shift gears by hand or foot, and that only operate on the accelerator and brake, fall into this category.
- Geared bike – This license is mandatory for driving all types of geared motorcycles and bikes.

2. A big mistake made by youth and women
While getting a license many young, especially women or novice drivers think, “I only want to ride a scooter, so why a bike license?” With this in mind they only opt for the ‘gearless bike’ option.
But the real catch was ahead. After a few years if they have to ride a bike with gear under certain circumstances or out of necessity, it becomes a crime legally. If you only have a scooty license and are caught riding a gear bike on the road, you are considered to have ‘no licence’ and the traffic police can impose heavy fines for driving without a licence.

3. ‘Insurance denied‘ danger of going
The biggest risk arises during an accident. Suppose a person has only a non-geared vehicle license and an accident occurs while riding a geared bike, the insurance company flatly refuses to indemnify. Because legally you are not eligible for that vehicle.
Advice of RTO
To avoid this hassle, even if you only want to ride a scooty at the moment, always select the ‘geared bike’ option while applying. Because the rules state that a person who has a gear bike license can also legally ride a gearless scooty. So understand the one letter game while taking license and save yourself from future fines.
