One of Spain’s footballing powerhouses is reportedly ‘serious’ about securing the services of Liverpool great Mohamed Salah, with the Egyptian forward seen as the ideal replacement for a club legend set to depart.
Liverpool officially parted ways with Salah on June 30 through mutual consent. The 34-year-old had one year remaining on his contract at Anfield, but with his performances showing noticeable decline and his dissatisfaction with a reduced role, both parties agreed to end their association.
Recently, Salah was voted as the fourth greatest player in Liverpool’s illustrious history, trailing only behind Steven Gerrard, Kenny Dalglish, and Ian Rush.
The Egyptian captain now faces one of the toughest challenges of his international career as he aims to lead Egypt past Argentina and into the quarter-finals of the World Cup.
Should Egypt’s World Cup journey come to an end against Lionel Messi and his team, attention will swiftly turn to Salah’s next move at club level.
Everton manager David Moyes dismissed speculation linking Salah with a shock switch to the Toffees. While Moyes praised Salah as an ‘exceptional’ player, he stated that the intense rivalry between Everton and Liverpool makes such a transfer ‘impossible.’
Instead, a move abroad seems more likely. According to a report from AfricaTopSports, Salah could be on his way to LaLiga.
Atletico Madrid are said to be seriously considering Salah as a ‘statement signing’ and are determined to finalise the move.
The Spanish side will not have to pay a transfer fee since Salah is a free agent, though his signing bonus and wages are expected to be substantial.
Diego Simeone’s team are preparing to bid farewell to Antoine Griezmann, widely regarded as one of the club’s greatest-ever players, when he departs for MLS outfit Orlando City on July 13.
Griezmann, Atletico’s all-time leading scorer with 212 goals, will officially complete his move to the American side next week.
The report suggests that Atletico Madrid view Salah as Griezmann’s natural successor. The club has a history of signing experienced forwards eager to prove themselves once again.
Atleti famously brought in David Villa and Luis Suarez from Barcelona in 2013 and 2020 respectively, and both signings helped the club capture the LaLiga title in those seasons.
If Atletico manage to complete the signing of Salah, it could mark another masterstroke for the club. Despite a challenging season, Salah still managed to deliver 12 goals and 10 assists across all competitions.
Once Egypt’s World Cup campaign concludes, more updates regarding Salah’s next destination are expected to follow promptly.
