The demands of travel appear to be taking a toll on Norway’s squad as several players have been struck by illness ahead of Saturday’s FIFA World Cup quarter-final against England.

Reports indicate that a number of Norwegian players have experienced flu-like symptoms during the tournament, raising concerns just days before the crucial encounter.

Manager Stale Solbakken confirmed that a sickness bug has been circulating within the camp but expressed optimism that the situation is improving as they prepare for the last-eight match in Miami.

Norwegian outlet Dagbladet reported that striker Jorgen Strand Larsen, who missed Norway’s opening game due to illness, and defender Marcus Holmgren Pedersen, who was unavailable for the Round of 16 victory over Brazil, were among those affected.

Solbakken himself has appeared slightly under the weather during recent press interactions, though he minimised concerns about the overall health of his team.

“We’ve had a few players who haven’t been feeling well, but things are getting better,” Solbakken said. “It’s not ideal during a tournament, but we’re managing the situation.”

Norway have been one of the surprise packages of the World Cup, reaching the quarter-finals for the first time in their history after pulling off a major upset by knocking out Brazil. Erling Haaland was the hero, scoring twice in the 2-1 win that sent his nation into the last eight.

Solbakken suggested that the constant travel between host cities might have played a role in the spread of illness among his players.

England, meanwhile, secured their place in the quarter-finals following a thrilling 3-2 victory against Mexico in the Round of 16.

Thomas Tuchel’s side, however, face their own selection challenges. Defender Jarell Quansah will be unavailable due to suspension after receiving a red card in the Mexico match. Midfielder Jordan Henderson is likely to miss the remainder of the tournament with a suspected broken wrist, while Reece James is being monitored after suffering a hamstring injury.

England are hoping to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup for the first time since 2018, whereas Norway are looking to extend their remarkable run in what has already been a historic campaign.

The winner of Saturday’s quarter-final will go on to meet either Argentina, Egypt, Switzerland, or Colombia in the semi-finals.
