Newcastle United are continuing their approach of investing in promising young talent, as they move closer to signing an 18-year-old prodigy from Ajax.
The club has altered its recruitment focus this summer, prioritising youth development over adding seasoned, high-profile veterans to the roster.
The departures of Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali have opened the door for a full-scale squad revamp, with manager Eddie Howe particularly eager to bring in youngsters with significant potential for growth.
The Magpies have already been active in the transfer market, securing French goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen and Ivorian winger Bazoumana Toure, both aged 20.
They have also been strongly linked with a major bid for Switzerland’s rising star Johan Manzambi, another 20-year-old talent attracting plenty of attention.
It now appears that Newcastle are on the verge of completing the signing of 18-year-old Sean Steur from Ajax.
Reports emerging from the Netherlands indicate that a £23 million fee has been agreed for the youngster, who made his senior debut for Ajax during the 2024–25 season at just 17 years and 36 days old.
The midfielder went on to feature in 26 senior matches for the Dutch club, netting his first goal in a 1-1 draw against Feyenoord.
According to the same reports, Steur had initially been expected to commit to a new contract with Ajax but is now set to travel to Tyneside to finalise his move to England.
Newcastle and Steur have reportedly reached an agreement in principle on a five-year contract.
The pursuit of Steur fits into Newcastle’s broader plan to strengthen their midfield following Sandro Tonali’s transfer to Tottenham Hotspur earlier this summer.
Joe Willock is also anticipated to depart during the current transfer window, while Arsenal have seen their bid for club captain Bruno Guimaraes turned down.
Newcastle have consistently maintained that the Brazilian star is not for sale and remain determined to keep their key midfielder at St James’ Park for the upcoming season.
