The United States Men’s National Team’s (USMNT) World Cup campaign ended in heartbreak in Seattle, leaving American supporters devastated, while the Iran Football Federation found cause for celebration. After a tournament marked by political undertones, Iranian officials issued a sharp reaction to the co-hosts’ exit from the competition.
Iran responds following USMNT’s defeat
The United States’ journey as co-hosts came to an abrupt conclusion after a 4-1 loss to Belgium, a result that sparked jubilation in Tehran. Iran, who were knocked out in the group stage after three consecutive draws, felt they were unfairly treated during their stay in North America. The federation quickly framed the US defeat as a triumph of football over political influence.
In an official statement, a spokesperson for the Iran Football Federation declared: “Now the whole world is dancing to celebrate politics’ humiliating defeat by football.” The remark was widely interpreted as a direct dig at the US government, particularly after US Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin publicly expressed satisfaction when Iran’s elimination was confirmed earlier in the tournament.
Reaction to Mullin’s ‘happy dance’
Tensions between the two nations escalated further when Mullin admitted his happiness at Iran’s early exit. The US official remarked: “I’m just glad they’re [Iran] done, and they’re not coming back. I was so happy when we were able to pull their visas and said they could leave the US soil, and I might’ve sung a song or two or maybe even danced a happy dance. I’m very happy they’re going back because there wasn’t a single team that we dealt with more than them.”
Iran’s response was immediate and forceful. The federation stated: “Iranians are used to the mistreatment and lies of US officials, so no one in Iran is surprised by these hostile remarks.
“These remarks once again demonstrate that US officials have no commitment to international law or the principles expected of a host nation capable of organising a global sporting event. The fact that he openly celebrates Iran’s elimination says far more about him than it does about our team.”
The statement also condemned what it described as the “inhumane and unprofessional treatment” faced by the Iranian squad, including being forced to shift their base camp from Arizona to Mexico and being denied visas for 11 staff members, among them federation president Mehdi Taj.
Balogun’s suspension reversal adds to controversy
Political controversy deepened when Folarin Balogun was unexpectedly named in Mauricio Pochettino’s starting lineup for the Seattle fixture. Despite receiving a straight red card in the previous round, the forward was cleared to play after former US President Donald Trump admitted to urging FIFA to review the suspension. FIFA later decided to suspend the automatic one-match ban for 12 months, a move that provoked widespread criticism and allegations of preferential treatment. Following the USMNT’s elimination, Belgium players mockingly performed the ‘Trump dance’ after netting their fourth goal, adding to Tehran’s satisfaction.
End of the journey for the co-hosts
The defeat means all three co-host nations – the United States, Canada, and Mexico – bowed out at the round-of-16 stage, ensuring there will be no home representation in the latter stages of the tournament. For the USMNT, attention now turns to the future, with uncertainty surrounding whether head coach Mauricio Pochettino will extend his contract or move on from the role.
