England have a number of key players treading a fine line when they face Norway in the World Cup quarter-final on Saturday.
Four members of the England squad are one booking away from suspension as they prepare for the crucial World Cup 2026 quarter-final against Norway.
According to the updated FIFA regulations for the 2026 World Cup, yellow cards will be cleared after the quarter-finals. This means that any player receiving a second booking in the semi-final would still be eligible to play in the final, should their team qualify.
However, players who were cautioned earlier in the tournament — in the round of 32 or the round of 16 — will be suspended for one match if they pick up another yellow card in the quarter-final. This puts several of England’s most influential players in danger of missing the semi-final, provided the Three Lions overcome Norway.
England’s knockout journey in this World Cup has been anything but easy. Their campaign continued with a hard-fought 2-1 win over DR Congo in the last 32, secured by a late brace from Harry Kane that spared Thomas Tuchel’s side from an early exit.
They followed that up with a dramatic 3-2 victory over co-hosts Mexico at the iconic Azteca Stadium. Jude Bellingham struck twice in quick succession, Kane converted from the spot, and England held firm defensively after Jarell Quansah was sent off early in the second half.
Quansah will be unavailable for the Norway encounter due to his red card, although the Football Association is reportedly considering an appeal. Meanwhile, four other key players face potential suspension if they are booked again and England progress to the semi-finals.
Among them is Bellingham, one of England’s standout performers at the Azteca, who was shown a yellow card for a reckless challenge in the first half against Congo.
Midfielder and vice-captain Declan Rice is also walking a disciplinary tightrope after being cautioned for a high tackle just 50 seconds into the match against Mexico.
Two of England’s first-choice defenders are also in danger. Centre-back Marc Guehi received a yellow card for protesting the referee’s decision to award Mexico a second-half penalty — a moment mistakenly attributed to Harry Kane in a BBC graphic — while left-back Nico O’Reilly was booked for an off-the-ball clash with Jorge Sanchez shortly afterwards.
Jordan Henderson was also cautioned during the same contest for interfering with play while on the bench as England defended their narrow lead, but his World Cup campaign has come to an end after he suffered a freak arm injury during the post-match celebrations.
With all four of the booked players having started both of England’s knockout fixtures, Tuchel faces a difficult selection dilemma ahead of Saturday’s quarter-final.
Bellingham has been in sensational form so far, scoring four goals in the tournament and assisting Kane’s strike against Panama. Losing him would be a significant blow to England’s midfield dynamism.
Still, with elimination ending any discussion about suspensions, Tuchel’s focus will undoubtedly remain on fielding his strongest possible side to ensure England’s passage to the semi-finals in Atlanta next Wednesday, rather than resting key players in anticipation.
