New Delhi: Indian fast bowler Mohammed Siraj paid an emotional tribute to football legend Cristiano Ronaldo after Portugal’s exit from the FIFA World Cup 2026 on Monday. Siraj thanked the legendary forward for inspiring millions around the world through a heartfelt message shared on his social media story.

The message came after Portugal’s 1-0 Round of 16 defeat to Spain, a result that marked the end of Ronaldo’s World Cup journey. The forward had confirmed during the pre-match conference in July 2026 that this would be his final World Cup appearance. However, he is yet to announce whether he will continue representing Portugal at the international level.

Siraj wrote in his Instagram story: “No matter what happened today. You will always be my inspiration, Cristiano. A single game can never define your greatness. Thank you for inspiring millions around the world.”

Siraj’s admiration for Ronaldo 

The Indian pacer has never hidden his admiration for Ronaldo. He has often celebrated the Portuguese star’s iconic ‘Siuuuu’ celebration, regularly recreating the famous jump after taking wickets.

Siraj’s admiration for Ronaldo goes beyond the cricket field. During the 2-2 draw in the Anderson-Tendulkar match in 2025, Siraj revealed that he started the day with a motivational image of the footballer as his phone wallpaper. The image carried the message: ‘Believe.’ He said the message boosted his confidence before the match and inspired him to take a five-wicket haul.

Portugal reached the Round of 16 after a dramatic 2-1 victory over Croatia, in which Ronaldo scored his first and only knockout goal at the World Cup. However, their defeat to Spain ended their campaign and marked the 41-year-old’s final World Cup appearance.

Following Portugal’s heartbreaking exit, Roberto Martinez confirmed that he would no longer continue as the team’s head coach.
