Pierluigi Collina, the renowned former referee, has firmly responded to United States President Donald Trump’s remarks questioning the integrity of World Cup match officials. As the current Chairman of FIFA’s Referees Committee, Collina swiftly defended the reputation of the tournament’s officiating team after Trump’s comments targeted Brazilian referee Raphael Claus.

Collina defends ‘valued’ Claus

The officiating at the 2026 FIFA World Cup has become a political talking point, with Collina leading the support for Raphael Claus. The Brazilian referee came under scrutiny after sending off USMNT striker Folarin Balogun during a group stage encounter against Bosnia and Herzegovina — a decision that drew sharp criticism from the White House.

Issuing an official statement, Collina made FIFA’s position clear: “FIFA recognises Raphael Claus as one of the world’s leading professional referees and a valued member of Team One at the FIFA World Cup. Throughout his career, he has consistently demonstrated the highest standards of professionalism and integrity. Raphael Claus is officiating at his second FIFA World Cup, having previously served in Qatar in 2022. He is an experienced and highly respected referee, and we maintain full confidence in him as a trusted match official.”

Trump criticises ‘suspect’ officiating

The controversy began with a clash between Balogun and Tarik Muharemovic, where a VAR review upgraded a foul to a red card for “serious foul play.” Trump, who reportedly persuaded FIFA President Gianni Infantino to suspend the resulting one-match ban, did not mince words when commenting on Claus during a White House address.

Trump questioned the referee’s judgment and background, saying: “That wasn’t a foul… that was two guys running at full speed who just collided. You can’t exactly control where your foot lands in that moment… these were two great athletes who got tangled up. This referee is a little bit suspect. If you look into his past — I don’t want to stir controversy — but very suspect.”

Politics meets football on the global stage

The decision to lift Balogun’s suspension allowed the striker to play in the USA’s round of 16 clash against Belgium, frustrating several rival teams. The political intervention in a disciplinary matter has sent ripples through FIFA’s governance structures, highlighting tensions between national interests and the sport’s regulatory independence.

Collina has already been deeply involved in implementing reforms this tournament, including measures targeting time-wasting and simulation. However, this public challenge to a referee’s integrity marks a new and contentious chapter in the relationship between the host nation and FIFA’s refereeing authorities.

USMNT bow out despite Balogun’s return

Despite the political manoeuvring that saw Balogun reinstated, the United States’ campaign ended in disappointment. The co-hosts suffered a 4-1 defeat to Belgium, effectively rendering the earlier controversy irrelevant in terms of their World Cup aspirations.

Nevertheless, the fallout from Trump’s comments is expected to persist as FIFA continues to defend its officials. While the USMNT’s journey has concluded, debate over the independence of FIFA’s judicial processes is likely to intensify — particularly as other nations cite the USA’s experience as precedent for their own disciplinary appeals.
