Manchester United’s efforts to reshape their midfield at the start of the summer have not gone entirely to plan.

The Red Devils have already failed to land two of their primary midfield targets and have made little headway in their pursuits of Aurelien Tchouameni and Alex Scott.

Interestingly, the club’s recruitment operations at the youth level appear to be far more proactive and efficient.

In late June, reports indicated that Manchester United were attempting to lure Xavier Parker from Manchester City’s academy. Fresh developments now suggest that United have made significant progress toward securing the teenager’s signature.

According to TEAMtalk, City are struggling to keep hold of the highly rated youngster, as “virtually every major club in Europe is attempting to prise the highly-rated midfielder away from the Etihad.”

The attacking midfielder, just 16 years old, is considered one of the brightest young English talents in his age group.

City are said to be working “intensively” behind the scenes to convince Parker to sign his first professional contract with them. Sources claim the club has put forward an “outstanding offer,” reportedly among the most lucrative financial packages available for a player of his age anywhere in Europe.

Despite this, the London-born midfielder has not yet committed to City. “The uncertainty has alerted a host of elite clubs, many of whom have already held talks with the player’s representatives,” the report continues.

It is believed that both Manchester United and Liverpool have presented formal proposals and are confident they can provide Parker with a clear path to senior football.

Parker registered 10 goal contributions in 13 appearances in the U18 Premier League last season, showcasing his immense potential.

United are also reported to be monitoring another young Manchester City midfielder, Karim Cassim.

While it is encouraging to see INEOS focusing on strengthening United’s youth system, the club’s leadership must also prioritise bringing in established midfielders for the senior team to restore supporter confidence ahead of the new campaign.
