Jordan Henderson has been ruled out of England’s World Cup campaign following an unfortunate accident.
England’s triumph over Mexico in the World Cup turned out to be a bittersweet affair for the entire squad, coaching staff, and supporters.
Under the guidance of Thomas Tuchel, England secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over Mexico in their World Cup round-of-16 clash at the Estadio Azteca, marking a historic moment in the tournament.
The Three Lions not only broke Mexico’s formidable home record – handing them just their third defeat in 50 games at the iconic venue – but also managed to lay to rest the painful memories of 1986.
However, the celebrations were dampened shortly after the final whistle when veteran midfielder Jordan Henderson sustained a freak injury while attempting to leap over an advertising board.
The Brentford player, who had been booked despite not featuring in the match, required oxygen treatment and had to be stretchered off the pitch.
Henderson was immediately taken to hospital for evaluation of a suspected wrist injury, while his teammates returned to their Kansas City training base to prepare for the upcoming quarter-final against Norway.
According to The Athletic, the 36-year-old will undergo surgery on his hand, effectively ruling him out for the remainder of the tournament.
Although Henderson’s on-field contribution in this World Cup has been limited to a single substitute appearance, his influence off the pitch has been significant. He is widely regarded as a key leadership figure within the camp. Unfortunately, due to FIFA regulations, England are unable to replace him in the squad following the injury.
FIFA’s rules stipulate that player replacements can only be made before a team’s opening group fixture, which in England’s case was against Croatia on 17 June.
Tuchel had already been forced to make one change before the tournament began, with Tino Livramento being replaced by Trevoh Chalobah after the former suffered a calf injury.
The England manager could face further selection issues ahead of the crucial quarter-final tie with Norway. Jarell Quansah will be unavailable after being sent off against Mexico, while Reece James remains sidelined with an ongoing injury concern picked up earlier in the competition.
The only exception to FIFA’s replacement rule applies to goalkeepers, who can be substituted at any stage of the tournament in the event of a medical emergency.
As a result, England will enter their quarter-final clash in Miami – and possibly the matches beyond – one player short, reducing their available squad to 25 players.
