Matheus Cunha has shared an emotional reflection following Brazil’s painful exit from the World Cup, describing it as the most difficult day of his professional life.
Brazil suffered another disappointing early knockout in the tournament, falling to Norway in Sunday’s round-of-16 clash at the MetLife Stadium — a result that many have seen as signalling the end of an era for the Selecao.
It was a bitter conclusion for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, who entered the competition still chasing their first world title in twelve years. Despite boasting a squad brimming with talent, Brazil once again failed to reclaim their status as five-time world champions.
Manchester United forward Matheus Cunha was among the few standout performers for the team, finding the back of the net three times in as many games before their surprise defeat. The 27-year-old striker scored twice against Haiti in Brazil’s second group match and added another goal in a commanding 3-0 win over Scotland.
However, Cunha could not conceal his anguish after the shock elimination. Speaking to Globo, the Brazilian forward said, “Without doubt, today must be the most difficult day of my life, professionally speaking.”
He added, “We created chances that we didn’t convert, while they took theirs. It’s hard to make sense of it all, but unfortunately, that’s part of football.”
Describing the mood in the dressing room, Cunha continued, “There’s a lot of sadness inside. A lot of tears. A lot of pain. The worst part is knowing we’ve disappointed so many people — that’s what hurts the most.”
The emotional comments from Cunha capture the heartbreak that followed Brazil’s latest World Cup campaign, one that began with promise but ended in disappointment.
