Jordan Henderson had to be stretchered off the pitch at the Estadio Azteca and was seen receiving oxygen following an unfortunate incident that occurred after England’s victory.
The Brentford midfielder, who remained an unused substitute during England’s 3-2 triumph over Mexico in the World Cup round of 16, naturally joined his teammates in celebrating the result once the final whistle blew.
During the celebrations, Henderson reportedly lost his balance and fell over the advertising boards while standing in front of the England supporters, who were enthusiastically singing a well-known anthem.
It was a thrilling and hard-earned win for England, who twice saw their two-goal advantage over Mexico narrowed before eventually sealing the result. Jarell Quansah’s straight red card just before the hour mark made the closing stages particularly tense, but Thomas Tuchel’s men managed to hold firm and secure a place in the quarter-finals against Norway.
There was immediate concern for Henderson as he was carried off on a stretcher after the match. England captain Harry Kane spoke to the BBC afterwards, saying, “Jordan just slipped over there, I think he’s fine, it’s just something to do with his arm.”
Midfielder Jude Bellingham added, “He’s in a bit of bother, but our medical staff have everything under control. It’s probably not best for me to go into too much detail because I don’t know exactly what’s happening, but everyone’s supporting him, and that was really nice to see.”
At the time of writing, no further information has been released regarding Henderson’s condition.
Henderson has featured only once in this World Cup so far, coming on as a late substitute for the final six minutes of England’s group stage win over Panama, after the team’s qualification had already been secured.
England are now set to face Norway on Saturday night, following Erling Haaland’s brace in their 2-1 victory over Brazil. England’s goals in the Mexico match came from a rapid first-half double by Bellingham, with Kane converting a penalty shortly after Quansah’s sending-off to add the third.
