  • The ‘username’ feature will not be launched until the discussions with the central government are over
  • Meta’s assurance

WhatsApp Username Feature: Owned by ‘Meta’ WhatsApp It has assured the Indian government that it will not launch its proposed ‘username feature’ in the country until the ongoing discussions with the government are completed. According to sources familiar with the matter, Central Govt WhatsApp has been given an additional three days to respond to the notice issued regarding this feature. The company was originally expected to respond by Friday, but has now had more time to explain its position. With this new feature, WhatsApp aims to facilitate users to communicate using just ‘username’ without sharing their mobile numbers.

However, the central government had expressed concern over this feature in a formal notice sent to the company last week. The government believes that this could increase the risk of cybercrimes such as online fraud, phishing and impersonation. As a result, the government has asked WhatsApp not to implement the feature until discussions on issues to security and consumer protection are completed. Against this backdrop, a delegation of Meta met officials of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) on Friday to discuss the matter in detail.

Meta replied to the notice sent by the government; That said, to find such content… know the whole story

Earlier this week, WhatsApp said that the username feature includes several security measures to prevent issues like impersonation, fraud and unwanted contact. The company plans to roll out the feature globally in phases later this year. Following the concerns raised by the government, WhatsApp also responded to several queries regarding the username feature on social media platform ‘X’ (formerly Twitter).

The company clarified that it will not be mandatory for users to create a username. Furthermore, pre-existing usernames on Instagram and Facebook, as well as usernames associated with public figures, celebrities, government agencies and ‘meta verified’ accounts, will be reserved so that they can only be used by their authorized owners.
