Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal are set to lock horns with their fierce Iberian rivals Spain for a place in the 2026 World Cup quarter-finals.
The two neighbouring nations will meet at the Dallas Atrium on Monday in what promises to be one of the standout fixtures of the tournament so far. But how has Ronaldo performed against Spain over the years?
Here’s a detailed look at every time Ronaldo has faced La Roja and how he fared in each encounter.
During Portugal’s home European Championship campaign, they were drawn in the same group as Spain, with their meeting scheduled for the final group match.
After suffering a shock defeat to eventual champions Greece in their opening fixture, Portugal were in desperate need of a positive result. They rose to the occasion, securing a 1-0 win courtesy of a 57th-minute strike from Nuno Gomes.
Ronaldo, then just 19 years old, played 85 minutes but did not register a goal or an assist.
The next encounter between the Iberian giants came at the 2010 World Cup, where Spain were on their way to lifting their maiden trophy.
Spain topped their group while Portugal finished second behind Brazil, setting up a round of 16 showdown between the sides.
Ronaldo featured for the entire 90 minutes but struggled to make an impact, as David Villa’s 63rd-minute goal proved decisive. Interestingly, Spain won every knockout match in that tournament by a 1-0 margin.
Fast forward to Euro 2012, where Portugal met Spain in the semi-finals at the Donbas Arena in Donetsk after Ronaldo had scored the winner in the quarter-finals.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner played all 120 minutes of the goalless draw, but Portugal’s strategy backfired when they reserved Ronaldo to take the fifth penalty in the shootout. Joao Moutinho and Bruno Alves missed before his turn, sending Portugal home without their captain taking a spot-kick.
If critics questioned Ronaldo’s record against Spain up to that point, he silenced them emphatically at the 2018 World Cup with a stunning hat-trick.
Both countries were drawn in Group B and faced off at the Fisht Olympic Stadium in Sochi in one of the most anticipated fixtures of the first round.
Ronaldo opened the scoring from the penalty spot after being fouled by his club teammate Nacho Fernandez, calmly sending David de Gea the wrong way. After Diego Costa’s equaliser, Ronaldo’s low strike was mishandled by De Gea, allowing Portugal to retake the lead.
Costa levelled again before Nacho redeemed himself with a spectacular long-range effort to put Spain ahead. However, Ronaldo had the final say, curling a sensational free-kick into the top-right corner to complete his hat-trick and secure a 3-3 draw.
Although Spain topped the group on goals scored, Portugal advanced to the round of 16, where they were eliminated by Uruguay.
Ronaldo later came off the bench during Portugal’s first-ever Nations League encounter with Spain. He featured for 28 minutes but could not overturn the 1-0 deficit after Alvaro Morata’s goal for the hosts.

In the return fixture, Ronaldo played the full 90 minutes, but Portugal again suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat.
Minutes played: 90

Both sides reached the 2025 Nations League finals, where the final went to penalties after a draw in normal time.
Ronaldo started the match and scored Portugal’s second goal to level the score. He was substituted in the 88th minute and did not take part in the shootout, but Portugal went on to lift the trophy.
Minutes played: 88
Goals: 1
Assists: 0
Across all competitive meetings with Spain, Ronaldo has accumulated the following record:
Minutes played: 591
Goals: 4
Assists: 0
In addition to competitive fixtures, Ronaldo has faced Spain in three friendly matches, two of which ended goalless.
The first came in 2010, when Ronaldo registered an assist in a 4-0 Portugal victory. They met again in 2020 and 2021, with Ronaldo playing 73 and 90 minutes respectively in two 0-0 draws.
