New Delhi: World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka was eliminated in the fourth round ofWimbledon 2026 by Naomi Osaka on Sunday, with the Japanese player securing a 6-2 7-6(2) victory on Centre Court. 14th seed Osaka dominated the match and left Sabalenka screaming in frustration during a 32-minute first set.
Both players delivered their best performance in the second set, but Osaka stayed calm to end Sabalenka’s streak of 21 unbeaten tiebreaks in Grand Slams. This is her biggest victory since returning to the tour in 2024 after the birth of her daughter.
A costly error on match point ended Sabalenka’s campaign as she buried a backhand into the net before venting her frustration by smashing a ball high out of the Centre Court. Osaka’s sensational win secured her maiden Wimbledon quarter-final appearance, leaving the women’s draw wide open heading into the second week with no clear favourite.
Osaka will next take on 10th seed Karolina Muchova, whose victory against fellow Czech Barbora Krejcikova guaranteed a ninth successive first-time women’s champion at the All England Club.
Jannik Sinner advances to quarterfinalDefending champion Jannik Sinner delivered another brilliant performance at this year’s Wimbledon by defeating Japanese qualifier Shintaro Mochizuki 6-3 7-6(0) 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals on Sunday.
Sinner arrived at the tournament without any grasscourt match practice after his early exit from the French Open in May, but the Italian slowly rediscovered his form after a difficult opener.
He thumped Mochizuki with a brilliant display of relentless power and precision in the Centre Court clash to stay on course for a successful title defence and a second Wimbledon title.
Sinner won the first set comfortably as conditions improved on a scorching day, but was left a little frustrated when the Japanese saved three break points to level the score at 4-4 in the second. The world No.1 then made a comeback and took the set into a tiebreak, where he produced more ferocious stroke play to beat the former Wimbledon junior champion.
He then quickly tightened the grip on the third set, but Mochizuki made a comeback and earned three opportunities to break back in the sixth game. But Sinner saved them and never looked back, setting up a meeting with German Jan-Lennard Struff.
