In light of evolving technology and future requirements, engineering education is entering a new era. Following advancements in Artificial Intelligence, green energy, and space technology, nuclear engineering is now being prioritized. In this direction, IIT Bombay has announced the launch of a new nuclear engineering program. This initiative is being undertaken under the SHANTI Act, which aims to foster research, innovation, and expertise in India's nuclear energy sector. The program will provide students with new opportunities to build careers in emerging technologies.
The program will be launched under the 'Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India' (SHANTI) Act, 2025. It will be administered by the institute's Green Energy and Sustainability Hub (GESH). The initiative aims to promote high-quality education and research in the nuclear energy sector, enabling the use of new technologies to meet the country's energy needs.
**Focus on Thorium Research and Modern Laboratories**
This new course will place special emphasis on thorium-based nuclear technology. Given that India possesses one of the world's largest thorium reserves, there is immense potential for research in this field. To ensure the program's success, multiple departments—including Mechanical Engineering, Energy Science, Metallurgical and Materials Science, and Electrical Engineering—will collaborate. Additionally, an Advanced Nuclear Measurement Laboratory will be established to provide practical training to students.
At present, the institute has not clarified the admission process, eligibility criteria for applicants, or the number of available seats. Details regarding these aspects will be announced later. Interested students are advised to regularly check the official IIT Bombay website for updates.
