Cape Verde's memorable FIFA World Cup debut came to an end with a hard-fought defeat to defending champions Argentina in the Round of 32. Despite the disappointment, veteran goalkeeper and captain Vozinha used the moment to express gratitude to supporters and send words of encouragement to the people of Venezuela.
The 40-year-old goalkeeper thanked Venezuelan fans for their incredible support throughout Cape Verde's tournament and offered a message of hope to those affected by the devastating earthquakes that struck the country in late June.
"Thank you for your support," Vozinha said. "Stay strong during this difficult time. We hope you find the strength to overcome everything you are facing."
The earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck just seconds apart and caused widespread destruction across Venezuela. Thousands of families lost their homes, while the disaster claimed many lives and left numerous others injured.
Vozinha said the tragedy reminded him of the severe flooding and landslides that hit Cape Verde in August 2025. Although the natural disasters were different, both countries experienced significant loss and hardship.
"We also went through a difficult disaster not long ago," he said. "I hope everyone continues fighting with courage."
Cape Verde's inspiring World Cup campaign captured the attention of football fans around the world. Ranked 67th before the tournament, the nation exceeded expectations by reaching the knockout stage in its first-ever World Cup appearance.
Their clash with Argentina proved to be one of the tournament's most entertaining matches. Cape Verde twice fought back after falling behind, forcing extra time before eventually conceding the decisive goal in the 111th minute.
Although eliminated, the team's determination earned widespread admiration. After the final whistle, Vozinha encouraged his teammates to stay proud of what they had accomplished instead of focusing on the defeat.
The experienced goalkeeper also revealed a memorable exchange with Lionel Messi following the match.
"I spoke with Messi after the game," Vozinha said. "He hugged me and told me that I was great and that my people should be proud. That meant a lot to me."
While Cape Verde's World Cup adventure has come to an end, the team's performances and resilience have introduced the island nation to football fans around the globe and inspired many beyond the sport.
