Security Tightened Outside Mamata Banerjee’s Residence

Security was significantly increased outside the Kalighat residence of Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata ahead of her planned visit to Baruipur, where protests have intensified following the alleged rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl. Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) personnel were deployed around her residence, leading to a fresh political confrontation between the TMC and the Centre.

The TMC alleged that the heavy deployment effectively amounted to an unofficial “house arrest” of Mamata Banerjee. Senior party leaders questioned why such an extensive security presence was necessary and accused the Centre of trying to prevent her from meeting the victim’s family. TMC leaders described the situation as a threat to democratic norms and criticized what they called excessive use of central forces.

According to reports, the additional security was put in place before Banerjee’s proposed visit to Baruipur, where tensions remain high after the recent crime. Authorities have not officially stated that she was under any restrictions, but central forces maintained a strong presence around her residence throughout the day.

Despite the controversy, Mamata Banerjee was able to speak with the victim’s family over the phone. The police have not issued any formal statement responding to the TMC’s allegation that she was being prevented from leaving her residence.

The incident has further intensified the political standoff in West Bengal, with the TMC accusing the BJP-led Centre of misusing central security forces for political purposes. Meanwhile, security agencies have maintained that deployments were made as part of precautionary law-and-order arrangements amid the sensitive situation in Baruipur.
