Chandigarh: Internal tussle in Punjab Congress has increased the concern of the party leadership. Amid growing resentment within the party and fears of a possible breakup before the assembly elections, the Congress high command has increased its proactiveness to handle the situation. Senior leaders sent by the top leadership of the party met the angry leaders separately in Chandigarh on Saturday and advised them to exercise restraint and avoid any major step.

According to sources, in view of the situation arising in Punjab Congress, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has taken the responsibility of damage control in her hands. Since Rahul Gandhi is on a foreign tour these days, the party leadership immediately intervened and sent two senior leaders from Delhi to Chandigarh.

Trying to convince Channi camp

It is being told that the party leadership has also spoken to former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi on phone and has urged him not to take any major political decision till the return of Rahul Gandhi. Although there was some softening of Channi’s stance on Saturday, his supporters are still firm on their demands. Channi’s supporters say that either he should be declared the chief ministerial face for the upcoming assembly elections or he should be handed over the command of Punjab Congress. He has also raised questions on the leadership of current state president Amarinder Singh Raja Wadding.

BJP is busy seizing the opportunity

Advice was given four months ago to avoid factionalism

It is noteworthy that during a rally organized in Barnala, Punjab in February this year, Rahul Gandhi had publicly advised Congress leaders to stay away from factionalism. At that time party president Mallikarjun Kharge was also present on the stage. Rahul Gandhi had clearly said that action will be taken against the leaders who promote factionalism in the party.
