Manchester United greats Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick returned to Old Trafford on Friday evening to witness a proud moment as their sons took a major stride toward professional football. Kai Rooney and Jacey Carrick were among eight promising youngsters formally welcomed into the club’s Professional Development Phase during the annual scholars’ induction ceremony.
A memorable evening for United legends
The event, held at the Theatre of Dreams, celebrated the club’s next generation of talent committing their futures to Manchester United. Rooney, taking a short break from his World Cup punditry work, watched proudly as his son Kai signed his scholarship contract. Carrick, who attended both as United’s head coach and as Jacey’s father, was also present to mark the special occasion.
The two 16-year-olds posed together for photographs, rekindling memories of their fathers’ glory days at Old Trafford when they played side by side in a trophy-laden era. The new intake represents the crucial transition between academy football and the professional ranks, with players eligible to sign full professional contracts upon turning 17.
Bright future for Kai Rooney
Kai has already made an impression within Manchester United’s academy, featuring six times in the Under-18 Premier League last season and making his debut in the FA Youth Cup. His rapid progress has raised expectations that he will play an influential role in Darren Fletcher’s Under-18 squad in the upcoming campaign.
Although comparisons with his father—United’s all-time leading goalscorer—are inevitable, former United defender Wes Brown has highlighted that Kai must carve his own path to success. The youngster’s technique and instinct for goal have already earned him appearances for the Under-19s in several competitions.
“Kai, knowing the kind of lad he is, will just keep working very hard. He’ll keep his head down. Of course, his dad holds legendary status, but this journey is about Kai. He’ll have to put in the work himself, keep learning, and make sure he gives it everything,” Brown told GOAL last year.
Midfield promise and new academy recruits
Jacey Carrick is also looking to establish himself in United’s midfield, following in his father’s footsteps. Although he made only one appearance for the Under-18s last season, the scholarship agreement demonstrates the club’s confidence in his potential as he enters a more challenging stage of his development.
Kai and Jacey were joined by six other players who also signed scholarship terms: Gazik Ibragimov, Edson Dejonge-Seiros, Harlem McLaughlin, Pharell Silvester, Connor Laurie, and Jaume Camacho. All eight will now embark on the demanding Professional Development Phase, aimed at preparing them for the step up to senior football.
Rising talents to watch
One name missing from the scholarship list was JJ Gabriel. The 15-year-old forward is considered one of the most exciting prospects in England but is currently too young to sign a scholarship deal. That milestone is expected to come next season, though Manchester United may face strong competition from other clubs interested in the talented youngster. For now, attention remains firmly on the newly signed scholars as they gear up for the new season. The journey toward breaking into the senior team is just beginning for this promising group of players.
